A group of Michigan public school teachers has asked President Barack Obama to fund a crisis fund for failing schools in their state.
The카지노 사이트 teachers plan to announce their campaign in a television ad Thursday and online Friday, with about $100,000 available.
The announcement is an important step, said Dennis Poth, CEO of the teachers’ union. The fund needs to be matched with cash on hand to reach the promised funds, the union said, and it will be used for new supplies to replace textbooks, equipment, staff and supplies.
“This is a very significant effort by these great educators,” Mr. Poth said in an interview on Friday from a campus event center in his union’s Detroit headquarters.
He said the teachers were working with an outside group, “Crisis Action,” to raise money but was unsure which group they w우리카지노ere working with.
“This is something they’re going to be going to the Wapronxhite House for,” Mr. Poth said.
On Wednesday, the president’s 2012 campaign pledged to double federal funding for failing schools over five years by increasing the share of low-income and minority students from 15 percent to 30 percent by 2016, up from 15.5 percent in 2013.
The Teachers National Association said in a report that most of the schools it is advocating for would fall outside the usual 20-year national average.
The teachers’ fund has raised $14.3 million so far, or about 12 percent of the goal. The union’s leaders said they expect they might have additional funds to invest.
“We don’t want to look back and complain about the amount of money we spent,” Ms. Poth said. “It’s been really fun!”
The group has been able to secure several million dollars from other sources since it began asking teachers, parents, others who can make contributions and supporters like Mr. Poth who have donated to the cause.
The teachers plan to talk about the need to take action on a wide array of issues, from health care to housing to education, during their event in Michigan.
